COPD and other chronic lung conditions rarely rule out life insurance — they shape which policy fits and how it is priced. Two paths cover nearly everyone. Guaranteed issue whole life skips health questions entirely, so COPD cannot disqualify you within the eligible ages of 50 to 85. Applicants with milder, stable disease may also qualify for simplified issue coverage, which asks a few health questions and can pay the full benefit from day one.
How carriers evaluate COPD
Carriers look at severity, whether you use supplemental oxygen, how often the condition has led to hospitalization, and your tobacco history. Advanced COPD or oxygen use usually points toward guaranteed issue, which asks nothing about your health. Milder, well-controlled disease can pass some carriers’ simplified issue questions — and simplified issue tends to cost less and skips the guaranteed-issue waiting period. Because each carrier draws its lines differently, the same history can be accepted by one and routed to guaranteed issue by another.
Choosing between guaranteed issue and simplified issue
Guaranteed issue trades a higher price and a two-year graded death benefit for certainty: acceptance is guaranteed within the age band. Simplified issue trades a few health questions for full first-day coverage at a lower cost. If your COPD is stable enough that a carrier will accept you through questions, that path is usually the better value — and comparing carriers is how you find it rather than applying to one and hoping.
